Yoga- A home practice?!

Over the last few months I’ve talked a lot about starting a home practice, I’ve sought advice on how to get started how to structure yourself, dreamed of flows to do on the mat and frantically jotted them down whenever a pose or transition has come to me. But I’ve always felt intimidated stepping on my mat with no direction.

I did yoganuary with Cat Meffan and practiced at home every day, I practice at the studio 3 times a week. I know I’m capable of stepping on my mat and stretching for 30 mins or so, but knowing something and actually doing it are different things.

Recently I’ve made a yoga playlist on Spotify. My songs are relaxed but vibey (is that a word?!) I’ve stepped onto my mat, at home with no direction a few times this month and I’ve decided the less I think about it, the more I go with the flow (literally) with my music in the background, the easier it is to flow. I’ve even stepped off the mat and journelled my practice because I enjoyed it so much, I can return to it another time.

So over experimenting over the last few months I’ve learned:

  • Don’t push a home practice, it’ll happen when you let it
  • Make a playlist that inspires you and go where the music leads
  • You don’t have to flow continuously from asana to Adana like in a class, take DFD/ child’s pose if you need inspo
  • Slow it down. Don’t rush through a sequence for fear or forgetting it. Hold the poses for a count of at least 3
  • Start with sun salutations, and adapt them where necessary, your body will lead from there, once the mind lets go
  • Smile 🙂
